Copyediting
Copyediting is an in-depth look at the quality of your writing. An emphasis is placed on the readability, clarity and fluency of your manuscript. Major changes related to structure and argument may be suggested, and inconsistencies, ambiguities and repetition are identified. Standard checks on the consistency of style, grammar, punctuation and spelling are also included.
Proofreading
This is the final step in the writing process. By this point, all major changes have already been introduced and the focus is on consistency. This includes stylistic issues such as hyphenation, italics, capitalisation and headings; spelling according to British or American conventions; the numbering of tables and figures; and overall formatting and presentation. At this stage, only minimal changes are introduced.
Proof-editing
Proof-editing is often the best option for those who don’t really know what they need as it combines many of the features of copyediting and proofreading. It considers issues of readability, clarity and fluency of your manuscript, but stops short of introducing major rewrites and structural changes. Standard checks on the consistency of style, grammar, punctuation and spelling are included. A popular choice for students and those on a tight deadline.
Editing for Non-English Speakers
You have great ideas, but some of their fluency and impact are lost when expressing them in English. I have years of experience in working with writers whose first language is not English and am accustomed to the obstacles that arise. I am happy to work on a document with you to ensure that your ideas are clearly and accurately expressed in English. With my TESL training, I am also able to explain the finer points of English grammar to you.
